Hakka President’s Report at 2025 AGM on 25 October 2025

ree

Dear esteemed members and guests,

I am honored to present to you the President's Report for the 2025 Annual General Meeting of the Hakka Association of SA Inc.

I had the privilege of visiting Guangdong, China from November 11 to 21 2024, covering several cities and counties in Guangdong, including Guangzhou, Heyuan, Huizhou, and Meizhou, these places hold significant historical and cultural importance to our Hakka heritage. During the trip, I was warmly received by the Vice Chairman of the Guangdong Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese in Guangzhou, and graciously welcomed by leaders and members of the Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese from various cities and counties

The highlight of the trip was visiting Songkou in Meizhou, which was the ancient embarkation point for many Hakkas who migrated to Southeast Asia and beyond. It was a truly emotional experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with our ancestral roots. The trip also provided valuable insights and opportunities for engagement with the local Hakka community, which will be instrumental in planning our members' upcoming roots-finding trip in 2025, which was planned but unfortunately postponed. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the roots-finding trip to 2026. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and look forward to sharing more details with you in the future.

We are pleased to announce that we will once again be organizing a Chinese New Year dinner to usher in the Year of the Horse in 2026. Since inception, we have already organised it twice, in 2024 and 2025. This event is a wonderful opportunity for our members to come together, celebrate, and strengthen our bonds.

I would like to report that all of our Management Committee plus a few of our members have been invited by the Minister for Multicultural Affairs to the 2025 Mid-Autumn Festival Reception at the Parliament House on the 7 October 2025 to celebrate the Festival together with other communities.

I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to our Honorary Legal Advisor, Mr. Hau Pehn Yapp, who has recently retired. Mr. Yapp played a pivotal role in drafting our Association's constitution, and his contributions will always be remembered.

I would like also to thank Jamison Lim, who is overseas at the moment, for sponsoring the wines for tonight dinner.

Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Management Committee members, especially the Secretary and the Treasurer for their tireless efforts and dedication to the Association. I also extend my appreciation to all members for their continued support and participation.

Thank you, and I look forward to another successful year ahead.

George Chin
