Winter Solstice/Merry Christmas
The winter solstice or dongzhi is a Chinese festival more important than LunarNew Year celebrated on 22 December each year.
The eating of glutinous rice balls, or tang yuan, filled with a sweet filling such as sesame or peanut served in ginger soup is part of this festivity. But many are unfamiliar with savoury tang yuan, most typically found in Hakka cuisine. Savoury tang yuan can take the form of meatballs and glutinous rice balls (with no fillings) served in a savoury broth. You can also find glutinous rice balls with savoury fillings like minced meat and mushrooms.
